Stopped Vehicle Detection

One of the biggest challenges of technologies detecting stopped vehicles is to be able to differentiate between heavy traffic and genuinely stopped vehicles. The result is a multitude of unwanted false alarms.

ClearWay’s rule-based software monitors the entire width of a motorway, detecting any incidents lane by lane, including hard-shoulder and emergency refuge areas. Road sections can be defined to alert operators to incidents whilst ignoring the normal traffic flow on adjacent lanes. The system provides unrivalled detection rates enabling events to be resolved before they escalate into major incidents.

ClearWay™ is a rules-based system which analyses traffic behaviour in real-time. The high-resolution radars scan 360° and can detect stopped vehicles across multiple lanes, despite poor weather and lighting. A stopped vehicle would be detected by the radar and analysed for several seconds by the software. This gives ClearWay™ the capability to reliably detect stationary vehicles, even in heavy traffic. Having confirmed the presence of a stopped vehicle, ClearWay™ will generate an alarm, informing operators in the control room of the exact location. Operators can use this detailed and accurate information to make decisions on closing lanes or altering speed limits.
