Stopped Vehicle Detection

One of the biggest challenges in the roll out of smart motorways is detecting stopped vehicles on live lanes. Traditionally, authorities would only be notified to a stopped vehicle after a member of the public had contacted the emergency services. This process could take up to 17 minutes, leaving the stranded vehicle in danger.

ClearWay’s rule-based software monitors the entire width of a motorway, detecting any incidents lane by lane, in both directions, including hard-shoulder and emergency refuge areas. The control room is automatically alerted to a stopped vehicle within 10 seconds, in all conditions, day and night, when other systems may fail.

How does SVD work?

ClearWay™ is a rules-based system which analyses traffic behaviour in real-time. The high-resolution radar sensors scan 360° and can detect stopped vehicles across multiple lanes, despite poor weather and lighting. A stopped vehicle would be detected by the radar and analysed by the software. ClearWay can detect stationary vehicles, even in heavy traffic. Having confirmed the presence of a stopped vehicle, ClearWay™ will generate an alarm, informing the control room of the exact location. Operators can use this detailed and accurate information to make decisions on closing lanes or altering speed limits. Vehicles are detected within 10 seconds, meaning a rapid emergency response can be generated.

Why Choose ClearWay for Stopped Vehicle Detection?

  • Rapid alerts when incidents detected

ClearWay alerts the operator in under 10 seconds of identifying a stopped vehicle. This provides the operator with maximum time available to manage the situation and activate warning signs.

  • All-lanes coverage

ClearWay delivers continuous coverage of all lanes in both directions simultaneously. Emergency areas are also monitored.

  • Pinpoints exact location

When a stopped vehicle is detected, ClearWay can provide the exact location of the vehicle on the motorway. This enables a faster and smoother emergency intervention.

  • Low false alarm rate

The system monitors traffic in real-time, with industry leading accuracy and low false alarm rates. These are two of the many reasons why forward thinking highways authorities have deployed ClearWay on their road networks, to make roads safer for all users.
