Points the exact location of an incident within seconds of occurring
One of the biggest challenges of technologies detecting stopped vehicles is to be able to differentiate between heavy traffic and genuinely stopped vehicles. The result is a multitude of unwanted false alarms.
ClearWay’s rule-based software monitors the entire width of a motorway, detecting any incidents lane by lane, including hard-shoulder and emergency refuge areas. Road sections can be defined to alert operators to incidents whilst ignoring the normal traffic flow on adjacent lanes. The system provides unrivalled detection rates enabling events to be resolved before they escalate into major incidents.

How does SVD work?
See SVD in action
ClearWay™ is a rules-based system which analyses traffic behaviour in real-time. The high-resolution radars scan 360° and can detect stopped vehicles across multiple lanes, despite poor weather and lighting. A stopped vehicle would be detected by the radar and analysed for several seconds by the software. This gives ClearWay™ the capability to reliably detect stationary vehicles, even in heavy traffic. Having confirmed the presence of a stopped vehicle, ClearWay™ will generate an alarm, informing operators in the control room of the exact location. Operators can use this detailed and accurate information to make decisions on closing lanes or altering speed limits.

Good to know
In the event of an incident, ClearWay can take control of cameras. This provides the operator with not only the radar’s picture on an overhead map, but also a live video-feed of the highway.
ClearWay can be configured to automatically guide the cameras nearest the location to focus on the item of interest if an incident occured. This provides the operator with a better knowledge of what the incident is and what is occurring. By having both an overhead map and real-time video feed, the operator can make better decisions on managing the situation as he has a better understanding on what is taking place.
Why Choose ClearWay for Stopped Vehicle Detection?
- Low false alarm rate
The system can accurately identify vehicle speed, meaning alarms are only triggered when there is a genuine stopped vehicle. This increases operator confidence and reduces time wasting.
- Rapid alerts when incidents detected
ClearWay alerts the operator in under 10 seconds of identifying a stopped vehicle. This provides the operator with maximum time available to manage the situation, dealing with it effectively to minimise secondary impacts and reduce damage.
- Hard shoulder monitoring
ClearWay enables smart motorways with its hard shoulder monitoring feature. It can detect stopped or broken down vehicles on the hard shoulder within 10 seconds, quickly alerting operators so they can close it.
- Automatically activates warning signs
When a stopped vehicle is detected, the ClearWay system can automatically activate highway warning signs. This can alert road users to the stopped vehicle presence, which will allow them to modify and slow their driving.
