Urban Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS)

We’ve proven our ClearWay ITS systems globally, contributing to some of the world’s safest highways, such as in Sweden. However, some of the most dangerous roads are those in our towns and cities. A report from the RAC Foundation found that accidents in the UK were seven times more likely to occur on an urban road than on a motorway.

To help meet this challenge, we ran a trial to see how our rdar-based ClearWay solution could enhance road safety and traffic flow in the urban environment. Our urban ITS solution would make roads in our cities safer and reduce journey times with applications such as dynamic traffic management, cyclist detection, intersection optimisation, and count and classify. We are already working with the leading urban traffic control companies on our development and welcome any further input.

The aim is that the urban ITS solution would provide comprehensive real-time data that can be used to optimise traffic flow, prioritise cyclists, rapidly detect incidents at junctions, and provide accurate information about road usage to inform decision-making.

From our work on highways, we have already proven that ClearWay high-definition radars can accurately detect all types of vehicles. Their 360° long-range coverage and refresh rate of 4Hz mean all road activity is continuously monitored across multiple lanes and on both sides of the road.

The solution is fully automated and can be integrated with existing systems. It operates reliably in all light and weather conditions and is cost-effective to install and maintain. It can be installed at the roadside, unlike other solutions that require significant roadworks.

The urban ITS solution will use the proven ClearWay high-definition, 360° radar-based technology deployed on strategic roads across the world. The best available technology for reliable detection in all weather and light conditions — it works in rain, fog, snow and complete darkness. ClearWay radars have a detection range of up to 500m in all directions.
