What is vehicle counting and classification?

Vehicle counting and classification is the reporting of the number and types of vehicles using a road, tunnel or bridge.

Live traffic count information is used by road and tunnel operators to inform decisions to adjust speed limits, open lanes and operate dynamic pricing. Historical counting and classification data are used to report on KPIs and to support strategic decision-making.

Optimising the use of the strategic road network is a key requirement for road authorities around the world with an increasing demand for capacity needing to be balanced with targets to reduce congestion and construction-related CO2 emissions.

Accurate data requires reliable detection every day, in all weathers. Radar works in poor visibility, including in heavy rain, fog, complete darkness, and glare. In these conditions, other technologies start to fail, and radar continues to work.

Incidents are more likely to happen in poor visibility, which makes the effective management of the strategic road network even more critical in periods of bad weather. With an accurate count, data operators can optimise the use of the network and improve safety by adjusting speed limits and opening lanes.
