Radar application for Autonomous Vehicles

Navtech’s industrial grade sensor has been used in trials by the Oxford Robotics Institute (ORI – Department of Engineering Science, University of Oxford) in Iceland as part of research into mobile robotics (aka driverless cars) in partnership with Arctic Trucks.

ORI mounted a Navtech radar, alongside vision and lidar sensors on the roof of a bespoke Toyota Hilux and Arctic Trucks took the equipment to extraordinary places – glaciers, giant rivers and volcanoes – to gather datasets in challenging environmental conditions in terrain that epitomises the “off-road domain”. Of particular interest is the role of a new generation of sensors from Navtech Radar. These units are immune to the effects of snow, rain, lighting etc., which impeded conventional computer vision and Lidar.
