Mining is largely concentrated in the ‘Pilbara’ northern part of Western Australia. Iron ore is a key export and is transported to the coast via 1,400km network of rail tracks. At the port, loading conveyor machines convey several thousand tons of iron ore per hour in to awaiting ships. It is essential to keep the loaders operating with minimal down time. If a loading machine gets damaged and production is hampered for whatever reason, the loss per machine is likely to be a minimum of approximately one million US dollars per day.
About the project
Navtech’s industrial-grade radar sensors were installed to improve the operators’ ability to fill ships without disruption to production and damage to infrastructure. The radars identify potential risks before they occur, minimising disruptions from loader damage. They work in all weather, light and environmental conditions, enabling 24/7 operation even in adverse conditions conditions.
