University of Bath and Navtech KTP Graded as Outstanding

The University of Bath Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) with Navtech Radar Ltd has been graded ‘Outstanding’ by Innovate UK. Navtech provides innovative radar surveillance solutions for industries focused on safety and security, and the KTP has contributed towards their latest High Definition Range (HDR).
The KTP partnership has provided Navtech with a new product; a sensor designed to detect people and vehicles across sites, providing an alert and track of the target to the operator.

Detection capabilities have now also increased where there are objects with a large radar cross section, such as buildings, fences or signs. As a result, the radar is more able to differentiate between a target and high clutter environments.

The next generation of radars, which will include the new features provided by the KTP, are already being successfully marketed, having significantly improved Navtech’s offering and differentiated them from competitors.

Richard Poulton, Hardware Team Leader at Navtech, provided the industrial leadership for this ‘Outstanding’ KTP with the University. Mr Poulton says:

“The KTP project has been a great success, enhancing our relationship with the University of Bath and resulting in a truly world leading product that will help bring safety security to vulnerable sites around the world.

Since the completion of the joint project Kashif has joined the Navtech full time, adding a new dimension to the team which highlights the value and contribution that the KTP programme has to industry.”

The KTP Associate, Kashif Siddiq, was supported by academic lead Dr Robert Watson, and Dr Stephen Pennock, from the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering. Dr Watson says:

“We’re delighted with the outcome of the KTP. Technically this was a real challenge – Navtech’s radar design was already very highly optimised, so some really innovative thinking was required to improve on it. The KTP has enabled Navtech to become a leading player in their market, providing their longest range of any sensors which has more than doubled the detection range.”

The ‘Outstanding’ grading continues a history of KTP success for both parties. Richard Poulton was awarded Design Engineer of the Year at the 2015 British Engineering Excellence Awards (BEEA), with Navtech, including Kashif, awarded Design Team of the Year. Also in 2015, Kashif Siddiq was nominated by Innovate UK for a Business Leader of the Future award at the national KTP Awards.
