Earlier this year, National Highways, responsible for the UK’s Strategic Road Network, completed the National Emergency Area Retrofit (NEAR) program—a nationwide initiative that added over 150 new emergency areas across England’s smart motorway network.
Navtech Radar is proud to have supported the successful delivery of this program. Working alongside National Highways and key delivery partners, our team delivered radar-based Stopped Vehicle Detection (SVD) technology to monitor these new emergency areas. This technology enables control room operators to be alerted within seconds when a vehicle stops —whether in a designated emergency area or a live lane—helping to prevent secondary incidents and save lives.
Across the network, more than 2000 incidents are detected and alerted each month, with detection times under 20 seconds and availability consistently above 98%.
