Stockholm bypass: Radar Automatic Incident Detection Selected

Published: 11/07/2024

The E4 Stockholm bypass

Förbifart Stockholm is a new 21-kilometre-long route for the European highway (E4) past the Swedish capital. The new link will connect the southern and northern parts of the Stockholm county, relieve the arterial roads and the inner city of traffic and reduce the vulnerability of the Stockholm traffic system. When the link opens for traffic in 2030 it will be one of the longest road tunnels in the world. By 2035, the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) estimates that the Stockholm bypass will be used by approximately 140.000 vehicles per day. Navtech’s ITS technology has been chosen to improve traffic safety over a 9-kilometre section of the highway, including on and off ramps.

To meet Trafikverket’s safety requirements for the road, Navtech’s radar-based Automatic Incident Detection solution was selected by Yunex Traffic BV., the contractor for communications, control and monitoring for the E4 Stockholm Bypass, as their technology of choice. On the project, Navtech’s 360° radar-based AID solution will provide multiple capabilities from the same system including stopped vehicle detection, slow vehicles, wrong-way driver, pedestrian, and debris detection. In addition to monitoring the open highway, the radar solution will provide AID coverage at the entrance and exit portals of the tunnels, where extreme changes in light affect vision-based instrumentation and driver visibility.

Due to the size and complexity of the project, the radar AID installation was split into two phases: 15 Navtech radars have already been installed across three kilometres of the northern part of the highway, and a further 31 radars will cover the remaining six kilometres of the larger southern phase, with installation starting in late 2024. The radar AID technology is already in use on other schemes in Sweden and was first deployed over 10 years ago on the E4 motorway, where it’s still supported in continuous operation by Navtech Radar.

“We are committed to working with Yunex Traffic to provide safer more reliable journeys to the people of Stockholm. This has involved working in close partnership, including our engineers providing technical training, to meet the challenging time scales of the project.

“Radar works in poor visibility when you need it most, such as in the severe winter conditions experienced by drivers and road operators in Sweden. This in addition to our system’s long-range detection, and ability to detect incidents at tunnel portals in extreme lighting conditions makes it uniquely suited to the project.” Ozair Baig, ITS Senior Sales Engineer (Northern Europe) at Navtech Radar.
