Stopped Vehicle Detection

Detect stopped vehicles in seconds on a highway or in a tunnel using 360° long-range radar.

Navtech's stopped vehicle detection system advances safety on any roadway where it is operational. It works when you need it most: in poor visibility when accidents are more likely to happen, and in harsh tunnel environments.

STOPPED VEHICLE DETECTION

What is stopped vehicle detection?

Stopped vehicle detection is an Intelligent Transport System (ITS) technology that automatically detects stopped vehicles on a road or in a tunnel.

Help needs to be deployed quickly when a vehicle stops on the hard shoulder, emergency area, or in any lane of the motorway or tunnel. Stopped vehicle detection technology reduces the initial detection time from minutes to seconds, when compared to operators monitoring CCTV screens and waiting for incidents to be called in by highway officers, police, or other road users — after which they still have to locate the vehicle on the network. It improves safety on any type of motorway.

WHY RADAR?

Why use radar for stopped vehicle detection?

Radar works when you need it most: in poor visibility when accidents are more likely to happen.

Roads are dynamic environments that can quickly become challenging: whether it’s low sun causing reflections or glare, heavy rain causing spray, or dense fog impairing visibility. In these circumstances, alternative technologies fail, and radar continues to work, improving road safety at the most critical times.

In the operationally challenging tunnel environment, radar works even when covered in dust and dirt, and detects through smoke and hot gases in the event of a fire.

ITS SOLUTION Why use Navtech's 360° radar solution?

Navtech’s stopped vehicle detection system will find a stopped vehicle in seconds so operators can get assistance to road users faster, close lanes and set warning signs.

Customisable software with rules-based alerts means you can precisely define what is a stopped vehicle on your network, so your operational team only gets the alerts they need. The solution provides the exact location of the stopped vehicle and can direct a nearby camera to assist operators in quickly verifying the incident. We continue to track the stopped vehicle after the alert has been raised, only clearing the alert when the vehicle moves off.

Our 360° long-range radar mean the entire roadway can be monitored 24/7 with fewer sensors. The solution has been proven as a safety system across schemes of 250+ miles, on new and existing motorways. It is in use in countries that experience long periods of darkness and extreme winter conditions, and in more temperate climates to reduce the increased risk of secondary accidents in low-flow, nighttime conditions.

Stopped vehicle detection is one part of Navtech’s wider automatic incident detection (AID) solution. The same system can deliver further incident detection capabilities such as wrong-way driver, debris and pedestrian detection, as well as traffic data such as vehicle count, with no further roadside installation required.

Customisable software with rule-based alerts

You can precisely define what is a stopped vehicle on your network so operational teams only get the alerts they need. We provide vehicle location information and continue to track stopped vehicles.

Automatically detects and alerts in seconds

Operators are alerted to a stopped vehicle in seconds, meaning time spent monitoring multiple video screens can be used more efficiently and detection is reduced from minutes to seconds saving vital response time.

Proven across long stretches of roadway

Collectively our radar are installed across thousands of miles of roadway. This includes on smaller schemes ranging from just a few miles to large scale deployments of 250+ miles.

Multiple applications from the same system

The same system can deliver more AID capabilities, including hard shoulder monitoring and wrong-way driver detection, as well as traffic data such as vehicle count, with no additional roadside infrastructure.

ClearWay

Navtech’s Intelligent Transport System (ITS) will find a stopped vehicle or wrong-way driver in seconds so operators can get assistance to road users faster. The same system can provide further actionable data such as vehicle count and classification.
