Queue detection

Queue Detection

It is imperative that road users are warned of a queue before approaching it to give them adequate time to slow down or modify their driving. Failing to do so could cause a multi-vehicle accident, putting other road-users at huge risk. Often congestion warning signs are not activated quickly enough, due to operators being unaware of the traffic building up. Being unaware of upcoming congestions is also frustrating for drivers who are planning their route.

Navtech Radar's all weather ClearWay solution detects a build up of slow moving traffic or queue within 10 seconds, quickly alerting operators so appropriate warning signs can be activated. In turn, this will inform road users of the problem ahead, and will require them to lower their speed to avoid an incident. Queues can also be monitored for live journey time information.

Detection Conditions

  • Fog, snow and rain
  • Fire, smoke and hot gasses
  • Water and spray
  • All levels of light, from darkness to sun glare

How Does Queue Detection Work?

ClearWay’s configurable software can be easily amended to generate real-time alarms in response to changing traffic conditions. The system is continuously monitoring the density and speed of traffic across all lanes of the highway. Unlike other monitoring technology, ClearWay can report on traffic statistics at any point on the highway, not just where the sensors are installed.

If the traffic volume reaches a configured level and the average speed falls below a minimum speed threshold, ClearWay will raise an alarm. The system will inform the operator of the exact location of the congestion, enabling them to take the appropriate actions to manage the traffic.

Queue information can also be used by traffic management for journey time measurement. This can be used to improve future traffic flow. Queue information is provided in real time, which also allows road users to amend their routes and avoid the congestion.

Why Choose ClearWay for Queue Detection?

  • Low false alarm rates

During commissioning, the system is finely tuned to to provide an unrivalled false alarm rate of less than one per sensor per day.

  • Traffic flow

Queues are detected within 10 seconds, providing plenty of time for response and intervention. When the operator responds, traffic flow and safety are maintained.

  • Reduces secondary incidents

As soon as an incident is detected, ClearWay will alert the operators who can immediately activate warning signs to alert drivers or change the speed limit.

  • Journey time measurement

ClearWay provides real-time information on queues for accurate journey time measurement
