FOD Detection
It is estimated that damages and delays caused by Foreign Object Debris (FOD) totals billions of pounds annually. Even small objects such as stones and litter could get into aircraft blades and cause damage to them. FOD is typically detected with manual visual inspections that involve personnel driving at high speeds down the runway. This method is often costly, time consuming and disruptive.
Navtech Radar's high performance FOD150 sensor is designed to automatically detect debris and manage runway hazards, reducing the burden on personnel and saving on overall costs. The system keeps the team off the runway, increasing operational efficiency and safety.

Detection Conditions
- Fog, snow, rain, sand and dust storms
- Complex or cluttered environments
- All levels of light, from darkness to sun glare
- Extreme temperatures
How Does FOD Detection Work?
The high performance, reliable sensor detects dislodged airplane parts, litter, stones and other objects as small as 3cm x 3cm x 3cm that may pose a safety risk. Each sensor rotates 360° every seven seconds. Performance is unaffected by weather or light conditions.
When the system detects a FOD item on the runway, an alarm is automatically triggered in the control room. Simultaneously, cameras will be automatically guided to provide a visual image of the FOD. The operator can then confidently decide on what action to take.
Key Features:
- Automatically detects FOD as small as 3cm x 3cm x 3cm
- Reduces burden on personnel and minimises delays.
- Reliable performance in all weather and light conditions.
- 360° scanning every seven seconds.
- Scalable solution providing full situational awareness.
